Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

  • No. Students may enrol in only one Summer Learning course.

    North Vancouver School District (NVSD) Summer Learning offers one instructional session per day, and all classes are delivered in person. Most classes take place during the morning and conclude before mid-day.

    Please refer to the specific program descriptions for exact course times and schedules.

  • Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to arrive on time and attend every class, except in cases of illness or emergency.

    The Summer Learning attendance policy is very strict because courses are delivered in a condensed and intensive format. In addition, the Ministry of Education requires students to complete a minimum number of instructional hours.

    Students who miss more than two days of Summer Learning—whether for an excused or unexcused reason—will likely be withdrawn from the program. This includes absences related to:

    • Medical appointments or planned medical procedures
    • Extracurricular sports or activities
    • Employment commitments
    • Family vacations or travel
    • Other personal or planned absences

    Families are strongly encouraged to ensure students are available for the entire duration of the course before registering.

Registrations

  • Please refer to the Resource Deposit and Fees page for details.

  • No. Students who have graduated by July 1, 2026, are not eligible to enrol in Summer Learning courses in British Columbia. In addition, students are not eligible to enrol in Summer Learning if they turn 19 on or before July 1, 2026.

  • Most Grade 12 students who graduate in June are not eligible to enrol in BC Summer Learning programs.

    However, students may enrol in Summer Learning following their Grade 12 year if they meet both of the following criteria:

    • They do not turn 19 on or before July 1, 2026; and
    • They have not graduated by the end of the regular school year in June.

    In other words, Summer Learning is available only to students who remain enrolled in school after June and who meet the age eligibility requirements. Students who have graduated by the end of June are not eligible to register.

  • The Summer Learning registration item is automatically added to School Cash Online for current NVSD students in Grades 7–11.

    The registration item is not automatically added for current Grade 12 students, as most Grade 12 students are not eligible to enrol in Summer Learning.

    If a Grade 12 student believes they meet the eligibility criteria outlined above, a parent or guardian should email summer@sd44.ca with the following information:

    • Student’s full name
    • Personal Education Number (PEN)
    • Date of birth
    • Graduation status

    The Summer Learning Office will verify the student's eligibility through MyEducation BC (MyEd). If the student meets all eligibility requirements, the Summer Learning Office will provide the student with a registration link and instructions for enrolment.

  • Funding-Eligible International Students

    Current North Vancouver School District (NVSD) international students who are funding eligible may enrol in Summer Learning without paying a course fee. Documentation confirming residency and study permit status may be required.

    Fee-Paying International Students

    Current NVSD international students who pay international tuition fees may be eligible to enrol in Summer Learning.

    To be considered, students must:

    1. Meet with their current high school counsellor to discuss eligibility.
    2. Have their eligibility reviewed in consultation with the NVSD International Education Office.
    3. Obtain approval from the NVSD International Education Office.

    If approved, the International Education Office must email its approval directly to the Summer Learning Principal. Once approval is received, the registration item will be added to the student's School Cash Online account, where the family can complete registration and pay the applicable course fee:

    • Full-credit course: $1,600
    • Foundations course: $800

    Please note that a common challenge is obtaining permission to remain in Canada during July. Entry and exit requirements for some countries may require students to return to their home country shortly after June 30, which can affect Summer Learning eligibility.

    Students Attending Other School Districts or Private/Independent Schools

    International students who attend schools in other school districts or who are enrolled in private or independent schools are not eligible to enrol in Summer Learning through the North Vancouver School District.

    Please contact your school district or school directly to learn about available summer learning options.

  • Yes. In most cases, students who attend another school district ("out-of-district" students) may enrol in NVSD Summer Learning, provided that space remains available in courses as of May 19, 2026.

    Students in Grades 7–11 Attending a MyEducation BC (MyEd) School

    Most out-of-district students fall into this category. These students may register online beginning May 19, 2026, using the registration link that will be posted on the Registration page.

    Registration must be completed through the NVSD School Cash Online Guest Checkout system. Please note:

    • The Summer Learning registration item cannot be added to a student's existing School Cash Online account in their home school district.
    • Families must select "Check Out as a Guest" when registering.
    • Do not attempt to log in using another school district's School Cash Online account, as this will not work.

    Additional documentation is generally not required for students attending a MyEd school. Once a student is cross-enrolled in NVSD Summer Learning, the Summer Learning Office will verify eligibility through MyEducation BC.

    If eligibility concerns are identified, the Summer Learning Office will contact the parent or guardian who completed the registration to discuss next steps.

  • Yes. NVSD Summer Learning maintains waitlists for courses that have reached capacity.

    If you would like to be added to a waitlist, please email summer@sd44.ca with "WAITLIST" in the subject line. Include the following information:

    • Student's full name
    • Current grade
    • Current school
    • Parent/guardian contact phone number

    If a seat becomes available, the Summer Learning Office will contact the parent or guardian by email and offer the available spot. Please note:

    • Families will have until the end of the day the offer is sent to accept the seat.
    • If a response is not received by that deadline, the seat will be offered to the next student on the waitlist on the following business day.

    Because spaces can become available as schedules change, families are encouraged to join the waitlist even if a course is currently full.

  • The Literacy 8/9 and Numeracy 8/9 support courses are designed for students who would benefit from additional practice and skill development before progressing to the next grade-level course.

    These courses are intended for students who have already completed:

    • English 8 or English 9 (for Literacy support), or
    • Math 8 or Math 9 (for Numeracy support),

    but who need additional support in developing core skills and curricular competencies.

    These are support courses, not preview or enrichment courses.

    When registering:

    • Current Grade 8 students should register for Literacy 8 or Numeracy 8.
    • Current Grade 9 students should register for Literacy 9 or Numeracy 9.

    Parents and guardians are responsible for selecting the appropriate course during registration.

    Grade 7 students are not eligible to enrol in Literacy or Numeracy support courses. If you are unsure whether your child would benefit from one of these programs, please consult their classroom teacher, learning support teacher, or school counsellor.

How does it work?

  • No, students cannot audit courses. Summer Learning encourages and support students who engage in the course and participate fully.

  • Students who register for Math 8 and 9 (Numeracy), or English 8 and 9 (Literacy) will be assessed on the first day of classes and then grouped based on skill level. This provides the opportunity for direct, individualized learning, and allows the teacher to focus on gaps in learning and the needs for support as demonstrated through the assessments.

  • Students who take Literacy or Numeracy 8 or 9 will be assessed accordingly and will earn a pass (meeting expectations) or a fail (not meeting expectations). The focus in the Foundations courses is on skill acquisition and refinement – not on grades.

  • No. Parents and guardians cannot register their child directly for the Elementary Summer Learning program.

    The program is available only to students who are currently attending a North Vancouver School District (NVSD) elementary school and who have been recommended for participation. Students attending schools outside of NVSD are not eligible for this program.

    Eligible students are identified and referred by their current NVSD elementary school to the NVSD Elementary School-Based Resource Team. Referrals are reviewed to determine whether the program is an appropriate fit for the student's learning needs.

    If a referral is approved, the student's school will contact the parent or guardian directly to discuss the recommendation and potential placement in the program.

    Because admission is based on a school referral process, families cannot apply or register independently.

  • Students will meet their teachers on the first day of classes. 

Communicating Student Learning

  • Final report cards will be published to the MyEducation BC (MyEdBC) Parent Portal on the first business day following the last day of classes.

    For students whose home school is outside of North Vancouver School District (NVSD), a copy of the final report card will also be sent to their home school for inclusion in the student's record.

    For students whose home school does not use MyEdBC, arrangements can be made to provide a copy of the student's final Summary of Learning (report card).

    Please refer to the Summer Learning Calendar for specific reporting dates.

  • Teachers will provide Learning Updates (interim reports) approximately midway through each course.

    • Foundations courses: A printed Learning Update will be sent home with the student.
    • Full-Credit and E Courses: The Learning Update will be published to the MyEdBC Parent Portal.

    These updates provide information about student progress and areas for continued growth and development.

  • Students who successfully complete a full-credit Grade 10–12 course will have their final mark submitted to the Ministry of Education by their School of Record in October.

    The only exception is for Grade 12 students, whose final marks will be submitted by the Summer Learning Office in early August.

    Please note that Grades 4–9 courses do not earn Ministry credit and therefore will not appear on a Ministry Transcript of Grades.

  • After Summer Learning ends, the student's School of Record is provided with a copy of the student's final Learning Update.

    The Learning Update includes:

    • The student's final mark (where applicable)
    • Descriptive feedback on the student's learning and achievement
    • Information to support course planning and placement for the upcoming school year

    In addition, all NVSD secondary schools receive a summary of Summer Learning results in August.

    Students entering Grades 10–12 who have completed a Summer Learning course that may affect their September course selections should contact their school counsellor during the two weeks before school starts to ensure any necessary timetable adjustments can be made.
